Ode to Neighbor Duane.

Somewhere along the course of your existence, I hope you have a neighbor who

loves playing with your children almost as much as you do,

who can always be counted on

for a meaningful conversation amid your day of sippy cups and diaper changes

or a good theological debate with your better half on the porch in the spring.

I hope this neighbor doesn't take himself too seriously

to jump with abandon on your daughter's third birthday

or hold up a paper doll Wonder Pet so he can see himself on TV.

I hope he is one of the first people to hold your newborn sons

and one of the last people to leave when you have a family dinner.

I hope your kids treat him with the allure of a rockstar and the familiarity of an uncle.

I hope your daughter says "I love you" to him on a regular basis

and always runs to greet him when he comes within view.

I hope his only condition for coming over to your house is that no one is currently contagious

and his only requirement for playing princesses with your three year old

is that all the dolls wear clothes.

I hope you have snowball fights and real fights

and both end in laughter.

Somewhere along the twists and turns of life, I hope you have a neighbor

who proudly displays your family photo outtake on his mantle,

who finds redemption in your messy house and beauty in your life of chaos.

I hope one day you have a neighbor

who is less a neighbor

than a friend.

[Single ladies, take note of the fatherly tendencies.]

Happy Birthday, friend. You are loved.

Ok, is he seriously single?? My neighbor and dearest friend fits the exact same description!! She is amazing, beautiful (and single...) I am going to be in so much trouble for writing this!

Mindy - I could hear you saying that & it made me laugh.

He is single. Hmmm... maybe we should do a little long distance match making. I'd love an excuse to see more of you. Not that my seeing you is more important than their happiness, destiny, etc etc. :)

(obviously this is a selfless act on our part. obviously.)

He sounds wonderful! I wish my neighbors were as great but at least I know that good ones exist.

Of course, as a totally selfless act... But can't you just see them trying to explain how they met to their kids?? I think neighbor Duane needs to work on a tan at Gulf Shores... don't your kids need to visit the beach? I need to meet your boys! However, my friend and I have been scheming a return to our favorite cabin just north of Nashville. Just saw your note, hope you are on the mend, you guys have had a rough run lately :(

What a great neighbor! I was reading through the comments and noticed a potential matchmaker scheme. We recently hooked up our two favorite neighbors. The only problem is that now we never see either of them. :(

Oh, you're going to make me cry! Amanda, your words (and pictures) are a blessing. Wish I could see all of you good neighbors more often. :)

Single ladies, my foot! That man needs to ask some single ladies out. I know about 20 who are amazing. I mean really. What makes these guys so picky?

And Yes, D is pretty awesome! I wish I had a neighbor like that too.
